Join Stewart and the team for an investigation of The Ragged School Museum, a Grade II listed building once occupied by Dr Barnardo. An incredible location spread over several warehouse floors.
The Ragged School Museum is a characteristic building with a fascinating past. Situated in a Grade II Victorian warehouse by the Regent's canal in London's Mile End, the building was occupied by Dr. Barnardo from 1877 to 1908 during which time it operated as London's largest free school for poor or 'ragged' children.
![]() These canalside warehouses, built in 1872, were once used to store lime juice and general provisions. They are now the only mid-Victorian canalside warehouses left in Tower Hamlets.
In 1868, Thomas Barnardo started a ragged school at Hope Place, Limehouse. Ragged schools were free schools for poor children. Due to demand, in 1876, Dr Barnardo rented two warehouses (now 46 Copperfield Road) and converted them into the Copperfield Road Ragged School for children aged 5-10 years. Here poor local children received a free education, breakfast, dinner and help finding their first job.
Each floor was made into a big classroom with a fireplace, and the loopholes (warehouse doors) were replaced by windows. The basements became the playgrounds. ![]() In 1908, the London County Council condemned all the Copperfield Road buildings as unsuitable for the education of children so the day school was shut down. After 1915, 46 and 48 Copperfield Road were divided up. 48 Copperfield Road was used as a factory until 1983, with the last occupant making motorcycle leathers. 46 Copperfield Road was used by Jewish clothing manufacturers, rag merchants, furniture makers, linen dealers and finally as a government surplus warehouse. Although only one hundred and thirty years old, the previous uses of the buildings seems to have left their mark. Over the last seventeen years there have been reports from visitors and staff alike, ranging from feeling apprehensive in parts of the building to the sounds of phantom footsteps and being followed down the stairs. The cellars, once the school play areas are full of energy. I must confess The Ragged School is top of my list of genuine haunted locations and can't wait to investigate this vast location. Stewart and the team have exclusive access to The Ragged School and all it's haunted areas. Will you be brave enough to join Stewart at this amazing location?
Upon arriving you will greeted by the team and placed into your own investigation team. It's then time to meet the rest of the team and to run through the briefing for the night ahead. After a short break you'll be whisked off by Stewart for his ghost walk of the location. Upon arriving back at base camp you will be given a short talk by a member of the paranormal investigation team. The talk will give you the low down on the ghost hunting kit you will be using throughout the night. You will then be split up into teams as we begin our investigations....this is when the lights go out so you'll have to be brave! Each team will have their own paranormal investigator assigned to them so you'll be in good hands. Each team will also be joined by Stewart giving you the opportunity to work alongside him as we go in search for paranormal activity.
We will be using EVP experiments, white noise, table tipping, glass divination and more to help us discover the spirits held within the walls of The Ragged School. Start time - 8pm
Finish time - 3am
Refreshments will be provided throughout the night.
